CANNON SALUTE @ GEORGE WASHINGTON HOUSE

George Washington (the first President of the United States of America) visited Barbados during the 18th century.
This is the only occasion he travelled from the Nort American mainland. He sailed to Barbados with his half Brother Lawrence in 1751
This historic plantation house on the Garrison ridge (on the outskirts of Bridgetown), also was also, originally the British Military Regimental and the Commanding Officers Quarters and later became Bush Hill House.
In the 19th Century West Indian Regiments provided garrisons throughout the Caribbean. West Indian regiments began in 1888 and existed as one British Army. The Regiment was disbanded in 1927. The Garrison in Barbados was withdrawn in 1905.
The 17th Century Cannons were features of the British Army,
The Zouave full ceremonial uniform (scarlet, white and blue worn with white turban) of the West India Regiment was featured form 1858.
In 1999, the Bush Hill Tourism Trust Inc. (a non-profit charitable organization) in collaboration with the Barbados National Trust, beautifully restored and furnished the house creating a heritage tourist attraction and museum celebrating George Washington’s visit to the island, as well as the role Barbados played in the settlement of America.
"Cannon salute at George Washington House" was inspired by the history surrounding the Historic Garrison Area.
